36th Day of Reading Conference

The Day of Reading Steering Committee invites all interested parties to submit a proposal for the 356h Day of Reading Conference, to be held in November 2012 at the Tinley Park Convention Center. The Secondary Reading League is a special interest council of the Illinois Reading Council, and hosts the Day of Reading Conference. The 36th Day of Reading Conference, November 3, 2012, will be held at the Tinley Park Convention Center, 185th Street and Harlem Avenue (near the intersection of I-294 and I-80).

Join this year's keynote speakers in presenting a concurrent session during the conference.

Internationally acclaimed educator Dr. Carol Jago (Director, CA Reading and Literature Project, Past President of NCTE) will present the keynote address.

Gordan Korman, young adult author will present the luncheon address.

 

Presentation guidelines:

  • One hour in length, per state guidelines to obtain CPDUs.

  • Our attendees prefer hands-on sessions, ideas they can use the following week, lots of handouts

  • LCD projector and screen provided in each room

  • Commercially based presentations that promote you, your publications, a company, and/or a product will not be accepted

  • Receive recertification credits (IL CPDUs) for presenting a session and for attending the conference

Our past attendees have indicated literacy and reading based topics focused on the following areas are in high demand:

  • Content area reading instruction (Math and Science, esp.)
  • Working with ELL populations
  • Assessment of secondary students (Progress Monitoring, Benchmarks, Diagnostic assessment)
  • RtI
  • Working with at-risk student groups
  • SMART technology
  • Reading and formal writing
  • Incorporating MAP Testing into planning and instructional design
  • Literacy development and the Common Core Standards
  • Motivation to read/Affective domain
  • Working with Gifted Students
  • Literacy Implementation at a large HS
  • Student journeys from non-reader to readers
  • EPAs and the College Readiness Standards

While all the educators submitting proposals excel in their respective fields, our steering committee’s final selection will be based on our ability to provide a well-rounded, comprehensive program.
